Trollslayer

The Grim world of Warhammer at it's best!  Almost non-stop action with a few grim twists.  It gets harder to put down as you go through the pages.  This novel is worth buying or just reading at the bookstore (what I did before I bought it).

First of all I'd like to start off by saying-THIS IS A BLOODY GOOD BOOK! The action comes thick and fast, and you really become attached to the characters-you've just got to feel sorry for Felix. The poor bloke can never seem to avoid trouble. Secondly, I'd like to praise Mr King on the way he has wrote this book. The book is wrote like an anthology of stories that link into each other, rather than writing it like the traditional novel. This means there is always some thing going on and there is never-repeat, NEVER-a dull moment. In conclusion I'd like to say that any Warhammer fan that doesnt read this book must be mentally ill because these books are simply unmissable!

This book as far as I can tell, is a bunch of short Stories about the two main Characters put together as a compilation and then turned to a book.

Troll Slayer by far is Standard storytelling in my opinion. I see it as an introduction. I do not think that it is awesome or great as some have put it. But it is some of Kings earlier promising works & trust me it gets better.

I recommend everyone to read trollslayer although not an epic adventure it puts the atmosphere, setting & background for the rest of this Great Slayer Series together.

Trollslayer is the "Hobbit" for the rest of the Series which I must add is GREAT (except for vampire slayer).

Want to know more about the dark grim life in the realms of the Empire? & what dark secrets lurk about in the shadows?

Then read troll slayer as the adventure begins. Thumbs Horizontal

A excellant start to the saga. This book contains a variety of basic principles which are able to be worked upon in subsequent novels. It is effectively a set of short stories which provide the reader with relitively light reading whist all of the time keeping them captivated using imaginative writing techniques.

All things considered, I'd say that the Karak Eight Peaks 'chapter' was the best as it introduced an edge that was lacking in parts such as the mutent children chapter and the last chapter (Children of Ulric). Although the Khorne/Beastmen chapter was good.

Considering that Gotrek was meant to die under a pile of cultists in the first story, he has come a long way.

When i opened this book i was a bit aprehensive. i had read all 3 of the Space Wolf books and enjoyed them a lot.

When i dug into them i felt that Bill King had put a dictaphone in front of felix and he then went and recited the books. the detail in them is amazing. He gets the right feel of the places they visit. the chapter entitled Wolf rider made me want to go and get a mounted goblin force or maybe lots of dwarves

this book was dead kool. Gotrek is hard as a hard thing. move over Buffy, im sure theres a pension scheme for unwanted annoying second rate slayers.

To tell the truth, the only reason I started reading this book was because I had won a free felix and gotrek miniature for screaming the loudest at a gw auction, but once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down!!!  this series is partially responsible for me starting to collect dwarfs.  though it was a bit grim and gory, I was very happy in the end when I realized how overwhelmingly the good guys had kicked the living shiznit out of the bad guys.  The only thing I didn't like was the way we never found out what happened to the wolf girl in the forest, I hope she didn't get killed, she helped beat the bad guys.

I love this book and indeed the whole series.  I have been reading fantasy and science fiction genre books since I was a teenager, and can honestly say that I have read only two other series to rival the sheer un-put-downable-ness of this series.  I read Trollslayer, Skavenslayer and Daemonslayer in order and absolutely loved them.  I think I am one of the few people who liked the way the first book was written, with its many shorter excerpts regaling us with Gotrek and Felix's adventures.  It really gave the impression of being written by Felix years later from memory, and perhaps his journal, by highlighting the battles and more memorable experiences.  Although I understand it was written this way as it was a conglomeration of short stories, I still liked it and thought it was a bit unusual and different from the normal run of the mill book.

Anyway, I'll say again, this is a great series, and not only for the action sequences, which are great, but also for the touches of humour.  I won't spoil the books for anyone who hasn't read them, but some of the characters's lines, especially Gotrek's and Snorri's (in the later books) had been gutting myself with laughter.  More so than any other books I have read except perhaps for Terry Pratchett. Also being from Hamilton myself (thats just outside Glasgow for you puny Sassenachs) I loved the way the Scottish accent came through in Gotrek's speech patterns.  Braw!!!

Cheers

Douglas

PS  By the way for anyone who wants to know, the other two series of books I ranked up with the Slayer series for unputdownableness, are the three Justicar books by Paul Kidd, published by Greyhawk, and the Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, By Steven Erikson, published by Bantam Press.

Trollslayer is one of the most enthralling and original works of fantasy literature I've read since I first started reading Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.

One of the biggest draws of the book is the relationship between homicidal maniac Gotrek and oath-bound human companion Felix. It's quite amusing to see Gotrek's carefree death-wish in effect as he charges headfirst into pitched battle with Orcs or Beastmen or extremely stupid (and unfortunate) humans. This is counterpointed wonderfully by Felix's desperate (and understandable) desire to stay alive.

One of thie few things I didn't like about the book was the episodic nature of the book (I later learned that this was because Trollslayer is an anthology of William King's short Gotrek and Felix stories).

Upon finishing the book I immediately launched into Skavenslayer without a moment's hesitation. It really is that good!

(One word of warning: It's best to buy the entire Gotrek and Felix series at once...that way you don't go insane wondering what happens next.)

An amazing start to an amazing series! The Slayer novels are the best Black Library series; even better than Gaunt's Ghost (which I haven't read yet, but I'm sure my prediction holds true!)

Wow!! I have always read fantasy novels, but stopped for a while because nothing interesting was being written.  I was foolishly seeking something that would be as good and enjoyable as the LORD OF THE RINGS series.  In my weary travels I came across this book, TROLLSLAYER. Lets just say, it has given me a lot more faith in the fantasy genre!  Even
though its a collection of short stories, and in no way has the depth of something like LORD OF THE RINGS, it delivers fast-paced excitement and entertainment.  In that respect, it beats out LORD OF THE RINGS, at least for me.  I read this, and the very next day (no joking) I was in the bookstore buying the rest in the series right up to VAMPIRESLAYER.  Read this book!!!!
