Dragonslayer

Oh look, the Skaven are back! I think that Thanquols getting a bit obsessed now don't you? Anyway, I found the fight at the start a bit tame as it was only really one-sided [I know it is all the time] with not really many enemies coming at them at once. I found the description of the actual gore nasty though, but this was countered by Thanquol getting some come-uppence.

The 'fight' with the Dragon was good and the incident shocked me, mainly cos I liked Varek almost as much as Gotrek, Snorri and Felix, oh well... The Orcs were just Orcs, brutal and dumb, the way Gotrek killed Ugrek was just brilliant and that was that.

All in all, a good read and I was left wondering:
1] What happened to Thanquol at Hell Pit?
2] Why weren't there any monsters with the Clan Moulder army? [They do make them after all]

After having a slightly monotonous start, this novel grew to become one of the best in the series. The sheer number of slayers ensured that it was nothing less then what is expected of these books.

The starting chapters set up a decent battle with the Skaven but it is totally expected that they get out of it with little damage done (lets face it, what happened in Nuln was a pre-emptive acount of virtually any conflict between the Slayer's axe and a Skaven army.)

The introduction of a mutated, warpstone protected emperor sized dragon was not the sort of thing that you would expect after the pain that the characters went through to get the Hammer of Firebeard out of the wastes. It was expected that it would take a lot to drive it off and crashing a gyro into it is something that I think could well be introduced into the Dwarf armies book as a desperation move (say if 20% of the army is left, but I'm digressing.....)

The sighting of the Chaos incursion is perfectly timed with the actual new incursion that Games Workshop have introduced (intentional or not).

Anyway, to the dragon hunt. This part of the novel is on par with anything else I've read in a 'Slayer' book. I pretty much despise Ulli (yes, I'd run from a dragon too but I'm not planning to get myself killed anytime soon). Steg is just Steg. Bjorni is crass but funny at times. Malakai is exceptional. A bazooka? It is simply a sign of how far he has taken engineering. Snorri is still Snorri (great character) and Gotrek is still Gotrek (death on legs). Felix, Max, Ulrika, and the two Kizlevites act in the general way that you expect them to although it does make a nice change for Felix to be the one slaying the 'big boss'. As a note, Gotrek's fight with the Manflayer (from the orc's point of view) is very funny.

You may have noticed that I haven't mentioned one character, Grimme. Although a completely minor character in this novel, the idea of his clan being killed by the dragon whilst he wasn't there inspired me to create the character in 'Warhammer Online'. The description of him doing about as much damage as Gotrek whilst fighting the orc warband got me thinking and it ended up as a ready-made character who I can add to to any degree.

Dragonslayer is one of my favourite Slayer books. I finished it minutes before going to see Reign of Fire, so the film had a lot to live up to dragon-wise.

The reader is introduced to yet more Slayers, and their personal reasons for wanting Skjalandir dead. Steg wants it's Gold. Cowardly Ulli Ullisson and Horny Bjorni Bjornisson are simply seeking their Dooms, and therefore redemption. Grimme wants revenge for the death of his clan. I won't say why Gotrek, Snorri and Malakai reasons are in case anyone reads this who hasn't read the book. Don't want to spoil the surprise now do we?

I found the description of why Snorri became a Slayer very moving. I very really feel real sympathy for a fictional character, but Snorri definately has my sympathies.

One of the few things I didn't like about Dragonslayer was Felix and Ulrika's "relationship". Their constant bickering and misinterpreting words, and the whole break-up, make-up thing just plain annoyed me. The action scenes in the book redeemed it though!

Aye, 'ello there. Now ya see, I'm a great fan of this entire series. Possibly the best collection of books I've ever read. Of course you do realize when I say possibly I mean deinately. I've na' written a review for the others but tha's becuase I only want to write one for my favorite of the series. Hopefully you'd be smart enough to figure out I was talkin aboot Dragon Slayer. Simply spectactlar the way it all was fit together, and I must say, William King describes a battle better than any writer I've seen before. In the battle wi' the dragon I could'nt even turn my eyes from the page, and I was on the edge of my seat for every last second. Also, not to say I'm all sentimental or anythin' like tha', but when SPOILER FOR DRAGONSLAYER

Anyway lads and lassies. If you need a good book, start with TrollSlayer and work yer way up to this one. If ye need a good series, start with TrollSlayer and work yer way up through them all!

I hope me advice 'elped pass the time for reading and maybe urged an indesicive soul or two to go on and give the series a try. Lemme tell ye, do and ye wont regret it.

Now if you all would excuse me, to take phrase from the mighty Gotrek Gurnnison 'imself, "There's killin' to be done."
