Athenys - an Eldar warrior and a relative of Auric Stormcloud, she is of the line of Manan, of the Craftworld Ulthwe. Athenys is Auric’s companion and bodyguard on his quest to Belial IV, and is extremely loyal to him. She has the usual calm and rational demeanour of the Eldar, but subtle cracks occasionally show, such as her anxiety before her first warp-jump.
On many occasions of Auric’s quest, she has proven to be an effective and merciless fighter, facing hordes of cultists and mutants and besting Zarghan Ironfist in single combat.
Auric Stormcloud - Auric is a Farseer of the line of Manan of the Craftworld Ulthwe. He is on a personal quest to thwart the daemon prince Shaha Gaathon’s attempts to possess rogue trader Janus Darke. Auric also travels with Darke to the dead Eldar world of Belial IV to retrieve the Deathsword – an ancient and potent weapon, said to be an echo of the sword of Khaela Mensha Khaine with the ability to destroy daemons utterly.
Of all the eldar of Ulthwe, only Auric’s relative Athenys accompanies him. The other Farseers do not approve of his mission, and a few even go so far as to try to stop him.
Janus Darke - The defender of Crowe’s Town against an Ork attack, and hero of Crowe’s World at the age of nineteen, Darke rose to even greater heights as the most famous and wealthy rogue trader in the Segmentum Obscura. He gained his success through uncanny insights – later revealed to be emerging psyker talents. It was also these same powers which attracted the attentions of the daemon prince Shaha Gaathon.
Inexplicably losing trade and explorator missions to a sudden barrage of raids, Darke was reduced from a triumph to a desperate drunk with one impounded ship. He encounters the two Eldar - Auric Stormcloud and Athenys – on the hive world of Medusa where they hire Darke’s ship, ‘The Star of Venam’ and he reluctantly agrees to take them to Belial IV, a planet just inside the Eye of Terror.
Kham Bell - An aging mercenary sergeant, one of the first of Crowe’s World to follow Janus Darke and one of the few still loyal to him. Kham’s few doubts about Darke grow upon hearing of his dealings with xenogens and the proposed voyage to Belial IV. Kham has a tendency to accuse anyone he doesn’t like of being ‘The bastards who killed my sister"
Simon Belisarius - Simon is a navigator of the House Belisarius, and Janus Darke’s friend and business partner. He meets Auric Stormcloud on the hive world of Medusa, where Auric invokes the Pact of Anwyn – an agreement made between the Eldar and the House Belisarius even before the formation of the Empire. Simon therefore has the dubious honour of repaying part of the debt by taking the Eldar to his desired destination – Belial IV.
He successfully guides the Star of Venam through the warp and ensuing daemon attack to Belial IV, and takes command in a battle against the Pride of Sin, Zarghan Ironfist's flagship.
Steil - the senior clerk of the Star of Venam, and a deadly assassin. Extremely loyal to Janus Darke, he is always ready to kill at the slightest order.
Shaha Gaathon - Over ten millennia ago, the powerful daemon prince Shaha Gaathon was instrumental in the fall of the Eldar and the birth of his master – the Lord of All Pleasures – the Chaos god Slaanesh.
Recently, Gaathon’s attentions were attracted to the rogue trader Janus Darke. Gaathon recognised him as a rare psyker – one who could hold even his considerable power for a long time. In that form, Gaathon could instill even greater hostility between the Empire and the Eldar, and bring about the destruction of one or both races. Gaathon sets his minions – Justina and Zarghan Ironfist – to destroy Darke’s life and to draw him into the cult of Slaanesh thereby rendering him vulnerable to possession.
However, the Eldar Farseer Auric Stormcloud becomes aware of Gaathon’s plot, and sets out to snatch Darke from his clutches. Auric also intends to destroy Gaathon but first needs to retrieve the Deathsword from Belial IV to do so.
Shaha Gaathon can take various appearances in his minion’s eyes but usually appears as a seductive member of the opposite sex.
Zarghan Ironfirst - A Space Marine of the first founding, Zarghan was a member of the traitor legion, the Emperor’s Children. He was discharged some time after the Heresy because of discipline problems, and he assembled his own small fleet crewed by Slaaneshi cultists.
Under the orders of Shaha Gaathon, his ships hounded Janus Darke’s trade and explorator missions until he himself had a run-in with Kharn the Betrayer. This incident left Zarghan with only one ship – the Pride of Sin.
Zarghan is ordered to pursue the quest to Belial IV and to destroy Auric Stormcloud and capture Darke, but he is defeated in combat by Athenys.
Eruk - One of the young nobles of Medusa, drawn into Justina’s cult of Slaanesh by the usual boredom and self-indulgence of the Imperial upper classes. He and his fellow cult members meet their ends while trying to kidnap Janus Darke - their transports, booby trapped by Athenys, explode.
Fat Roj - a powerful businessman and crime boss on Medusa. Known occupations include a meat-packing business and illicit gambling dens. Fat Roj is very tall, and as his name implies, extremely obese. Notoriously cruel, he has been known to do interesting things with a pair of pincers to gambling debtors.
He meets with an even more interesting fate in one of his meat-packing warehouses, at the hands of Janus Darke’s emerging psyker powers.
Justina - Owner of a bar – the Palace of Pleasure – on Medusa, and chief priestess of the local cult of Slaanesh. For a while she pretends to be Janus Darke’s friend and confidante – all the while drawing him closer to eventual possession by her master Shaha Gaathon.
Malarys - Once an imperial priest, then the helmsman of Zarghan Ironfist’s ship ‘The Pride of Sin’. An aging psyker, Malarys was possessed by Zarghan’s ‘pet’ daemon. His soul is finally consumed on Belial IV, due to possession by an altogether more powerful daemon. Namely, Shaha Gaathon.
Weezel - A sneaky, rat-faced informer on Medusa, Weezel was the only survivor of Janus Darke’s psychic retaliation to Fat Roj.
