Gotrek Gurnisson - the mighty dwarf slayer and all round killing machine. Death plays a major part in the Slayer's life as he faces the mightiest foes he can find, in an effort to achieve his own heroic demise.
Felix Jaeger - his companion, a Dwarf Friend and Rememberer, oathbound to follow Gotrek through the Chaos Wastes themselves to record the Slayer's epic doom.
Malakai Makaisson - thought to be the best engineer who ever lived. He was drummed out of the Guild of Engineers after the first airship fiasco and became a Slayer.
Maximilian Schrieber - a powerful mage, expelled from the Imperial College of Magicians for showing an unhealthy interest in Chaos. He casts the spells of protection on the Spirit of Grungni.
Snorri Nosebiter - an incredibly tough, incredibly stupid dwarf Slayer who has three nails painted different colours driven into his skull in lieu of a crest. He fights with a hammer and axe.
Ulrika Magdova Straghov - a beautiful Kislevite and expert swordswoman. Her father is March Warden of an estate bordering the Troll country.
Varek Varigsson - son of Vareg of the Clan Grimnar and nephew of Borek. A scholar like his uncle.
Grey Seer Thanquol - pre-eminent among the Grey Seers, the feared and potent skaven magicians who rank just below the Council of Thirteen itself. See also Skavenslayer.
The Terror - The Great Destroyer, the daemon at Karag Dum. Originally driven off by Runemaster Valek who sustained fatal injuries in the process, it awaits the return of the Axebearer to fulfil it's Prophesy.
Blorri - dwarf who lost a hand when one of Malakai's bombs went off unexpectedly. Had to have it replaced with a hook.
Borek the Scholar - An ancient dwarf of the Line of Grimnar and also Varek's uncle. He is the organiser of the expedition to the Chaos Wastes.
Elector Count Stephan - the ruler of Middenheim, a military man who helped fund Max's research.
Hans Muller - the Divine One. A filthy unkempt and quite, quite mad mage who's Spell of Translocation went wrong so he ended up the Ruined City in the Chaos Wastes.
Hargrim - son of Thangrim Firebeard, a massive broad-shouldered dwarf and leader of the Tunnel Fighters at Karag Dum.
High Runesmith Valek - smote the Terror with the Axe and then spoke the Rune of Unbinding to try and vanquish it. It withdrew but not before prophesying it would return to be the dwarf's doom.
Hogan Longbeard - dwarf who read Snorri the letter he received from Borek.
Ivan Straghov- Ulrika's father and friend of Borek and Gotrek. A huge burly man with a long white beard and a shaved head except for a top knot. He is March Warden, in command of a thousand men.
Knights of the White Wolf - the elite guard of Stephan, the ruler of Middenheim
Morakai - Thangrim's other son who died out in the wastes in the cave surrounded by the bodies of the twenty beastmen he'd killed.
Morkin - the sentry supposed to relieve Volgar at the Sentry Outpost at the Lonely Tower.
Olgar Olgersson - Also known as Olgar Goldgrabber because of his miserly tendencies. He funds the expedition to the Chaos Wastes.
Priest of Grimnir - Thangrim's advisor at Karag Dum, carries an axe and is armoured
Priestess of Valaya - one of Thangrim's advisors. A knower of truth
Thangrim Firebeard - leader of the Dwarfs at Karag Dum. Old but still powerful dwarf with long red hair and beard striped with white, he carries the Hammer of Fate
Torvald - one of Hargrim's tunnel fighters, an old miserable looking dwarf with deepset eyes and a beard of pure grey.
Vareg - Borek's brother and Varek's father. The only other surviving messenger from Karag DumVolgar Volgarsson - the Lonely Tower sentry.
Grimnir - Dwarf Ancestor-God. See Trollslayer
Grungni - Dwarf Ancestor-God. See Trollslayer
Ulric - the berserker God and Lord of the Wolves. Worshipped by most of the inhabitants of Middenheim.
Sigmar - patron deity of the Empire. See Trollslayer
Valaya - Dwarf Ancestor-God. See Trollslayer
Creature in the Pool - a huge mutated, many tentacled thing that resides in the Sacrificial Pool inside the ziggurat.
Flesh Hounds of Khorne - monstrous dogs with strange reptilian ruffles around their heads and iron collars round their necks. Blood coloured flesh which seems impervious to ordinary weapons.
Harpies - hideous, winged humanoid creatures that Gotrek, Felix and Snorri fight in the ziggurat in the ancient Ruined City.
Horned Rat, the - the Skaven God. Lurker in the Unknowable Darkness, the Scurrying Lord of the Pit.
Khorne - the Blood God, Lord of the Throne of Skulls. Portrayed as a massive warrior with bat wings, armed with sword and whip and a helm which obscured it's features
Nurgle - Daemon God of Plague. In the Chaos Wastes, there is a statue of huge squatting thing, it's sides covered in boils and cankers which represents it
Slannesh - Lord of Unspeakable Pleasures. Statuewise, it is represented as a figure not quite man, not quite woman with a lascivious & mocking expression on it's face.
Tzeentch - the Architect of Fate, the Changer of the Ways. In the Chaos Wastes, there is a statue of a bird-headed figure with huge wings enfolded round its body, supposedly meant to represent it.
Boneripper II - Thanquol's rat-ogre bodyguard and the second to bear that name.
Grotz - another of Thanquol's henchlings and a Clawleader. He has a warpstone powered communication amulet hammered into his skull by his master.
Lurk Snitchtongue - Thanquol's henchling and Clawleader. He has a warpstone powered communication amulet hammered into his skull by his master and sneaks aboard the Spirit of Grungni at his master's command. An encounter with a warpstorm leaves him somewhat changed. See also Skavenslayer
Underleader Vrishat - a pushy, fierce skaven who wants to challenge Lurk for the position of Clawleader.
Axe of the Runemasters - Also known as the Axe of Valek.
Bombs - Unpredictable but ingenious munitions devised by Malakai and used by Varek.
Gottliebs Anthology - a chapbook in which Felix had some of his Imperial poetry published by the Altdorf Press.
Great Book of Grudges - on page 3542 of Volume 469, there is a record of a debt of Blood the dwarfs owe the foul followers of the Dark Powers for the downfall of Karag Dum.
Guild of Engineers - a dwarf guild, somewhat set in it's ways and not atall comfortable in embracing new ideas.
Hammer of Fate - the mighty magical warhammer used by King Thangrim, said to be one of the artefacts bequeathed to the dwarfs by the Ancestor-Gods.
Indestructible, The - Malakai's first flying ship. Big as a sailing ship, the fuselage was over 100 paces long and the ship itself could fly at ten leagues and hour. It crashed, with crosswinds and liftgas leaks thought to be the likely culprits for the disaster.
Mikal's Stone - a runestone that contains old enchantments that make sure drinking water is safe in Karag Dum
Mouldy Leaf - famous brand of World's Edge Tabac
Old Tongue - Language spoken by the Dwarfs.
Runes of Concealment - used to protect the Dwarf Halls in Karag Dum
Seeing Stone - Thanquol's means of viewing things from a distance. A large, multi-facetted piece of coloured glass inscribed with thirteen most sacred symbols of the Horned Rat. It is made of mooncrystal and each rune was carved on a moonless night to embed the spell.
Spirit of Grungni, The - the second airship built by Malakai. It is capable of flying over 200 leagues per day and is a truly magnificent feat of engineering. It is, however, against all Guild of Engineer Regulations so it had to be built in secret.
Terror's Prophesy, The - it would one day return and tear out Thangrim's heart with its claws and devour it before his still living eyes.
Unsinkable, The - Malakai's famous steamship and the biggest one ever seen. Two hundred paces long and weighing over 500 tons, it could sail at over three leagues an hour and had steam powered Gatling turrets for protection. It hit a rock and sank though some said the boiler exploded.
Unstoppable, The - the name Malakai wanted to give the Spirit of Grungni
Valek's Prophesy - to fear not for the Axe would return to them when the Last Days came.
